Work at height: Can digital tech improve safety?

  1. There is no question that digital technology can improve safety, but it cannot replace experience, and can it create complacency.
I suggest that a cause of increased working at heights incidents can be attributed to personnel being asked to work at height without practical experience, experience is gained by actually working at height on the job with close supervision, not by virtual reality in a class room. Training, virtual reality, in a class room may convince an employer that he has fulfilled his training obligation but it is a different situation when working in an environment that you may not be accustomed to.
Also, could training in an environment where you can easily step away from the hazard (switch off the training), make you complacent in a real life environment?
