Construction output rose above pre-pandemic level in March

Construction output in March 2021 was 2.4% (£334m) above the February 2021 pre-pandemic level, according to the latest official figures.

Monthly construction output grew by 5.8% in March 2021 according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), driven by growth in new work (6.7%) and repair and maintenance (4.4%).

Compared to February 2020, repair and maintenance work was 7.7% (£377m) up in March 2021, while new work was 0.5% (£44m) down.

The level of construction output in March 2021 was £14.3bn – the highest since September 2019 when it was £14.4bn.

New orders increased by 12.2% (£1.2bn) in the first quarter of 2021, compared with the fourth quarter of 2020.
